BoysBasketballEDMONTON, Ky. — John Calvery knocked down the biggest free throws of his young career on Thursday to propel the Todd County Central boys’ basketball team to one of its biggest wins in a decade.

Calvery, a freshman for the Rebels, drilled a pair of shots from the charity stripe with 3.4 seconds remaining to break a tie score and lead Todd to a 61-59 win over Monroe County in the All “A” Classic 4th Region semifinals.

The victory, which is the sixth straight for TCCHS, ties the program’s longest winning streak since the Rebels won six in a row in January 2002, and propelled Todd County Central into its first All “A” regional championship game since 2004.

Calvery finished Thursday’s contest with 11 points and was 1-of-4 on free throws in the game before stepping to the line to sink the game-winning shots. Nolan Barrow led all Rebels with 14 points, while Bradley Case had 13. The duo combined to make all eight of Todd’s 3-pointers.

Ryan Briggs was also clutch at the line down the stretch and scored four of his eight points — all free throws — in the fourth quarter.

Monroe County, which was led by a game-high 23 points from Michael Dyerbilly, and was the defending All “A” 4th Region champion, trailed by nine points at the end of three quarters before tying the game with 1:36 to go and taking a brief 58-56 lead with 45 seconds remaining. Dyerbilly scored 11 of his 23 in the game’s fourth quarter.

Todd would fight back with key free throws by Briggs, however, to complete the upset win in Edmonton.

The Rebels, who haven’t played in an All “A” regional final in 12 years, will take on Glasgow at 8 p.m. Saturday at Metcalfe County High School, the tournament’s host.
